NIN|JA at Shoreline

nine inch nails janes addiction street sweeper social club

What do you get when two of the hardest rocking acts team up to tour? One helluva good show. Having seen Nine Inch Nails in Vegas last December I didn’t want to miss this show, and Jane’s Addiction was the delicious icing on this rockin’ cake.

Street Sweeper Social Club, the new project for Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine fame, opened the show. Even with our early start heading to the venue we only heard a portion of their show while we waited in line at the bar for drinks. They weren’t wasn’t half bad, had a similar feel to Rage Against the Machine, but to be honest I really wasn’t paying attention.

With cocktails in hand we headed down to our 10th row seats. We were situated off to the left side, but had a great vantage point. Shoreline is one of my least favorite venues, but having good seats made up for its shortcomings.

It was still light out when NIN came on a little after their scheduled 7:45 start time. This was a bit weird considering the dark nature of the music. Visually, the show was much more stripped down than last tour – rows of white par cans and strobes and no color whatsoever. Compared to last tour some might be disappointed to not have all the elaborate screens backdrops and moving head lights. However, this tour seems more about channeling energy through the music rather than relying on elaborate production values. I’d say they succeeded.

During set break Whit, Nicole, Amy and I headed up to the lawn to relax and check the vantage point from up there. It made me appreciate the great seats we had and reinforced how much I despise the lawn at shoreline. Steep, far, and sound too quiet.

When Jane’s took the stage at about 9:30 we promptly stood up and walked swiftly to our seats. The intro was a clip from the movie where the son laments wishing seeing Jane’s before they broke up. The band played the intro to Three Days during the clip and launched into the song as the screen lifted to reveal the band. Jane’s was on point and I love hearing the full sound. Dave Navarro killed it on the guitar and regularly came to our side of the stage to ham it up for the audience.

Of the two, I enjoyed Nine Inch Nails the most. While Trent will play some of his older material, it’s obvious he’s continuing to work on his music and willing to experiment and take chances with his shows. Jane’s on the other hand played almost all their material from Ritual and Nothing’s Shockin, and very little from Strays. So while the music is great, they aren’t pushing themselves with much new material.

Post show weirdness. There was a helicopter flying around with a spotlight obviously searching the area for someone. Apparently someone stole a police car. Buncha savages!

Firefox memory leak is killing me

OMG, I’ve been trying to finish a post about NIN|JA and suddenly my computer starts crashing an hanging like crazy. At the same time my Ableton session crashed*. In looking at my processes Firefox was using 1.7 GB of memory! 1.7 GB? Seriously? WTF!! I’m running Firefox 3.0.10 and the memory leak issues were supposed to be a thing of the past. Guess not.

Tekzilla has a tip to free up RAM when you minimize firefox. The video is rather confusing, so I’ll type it out here.

  1. Open Firefox
  2. In the address bar type about.config
  3. You may see a warning about voiding a warranty. Just click OK
  4. You’ll be presented with a list of configuration files.
  5. On any of them, right-click, select NEW, select BOOLEAN, then type config.trim_on_minimize
  6. Then select true to enable
  7. Restart Firefox.

There are a few more tips here, but another thing to try is RAMback, which is an extension which allows you to manually free up memory.

It might be time to try Google Chrome.

* I’m well aware I shouldn’t be running music production and general computing on the same machine, but I like to multi-task. Plus, there isn’t physical room nor budget for another computer.
